- 2 Choose your Cable.
- Double Insulated Cable
-
Twice the protection against water, and accidental damage.
We recommend using Double insulated cable for all installations. The additional protection provides an extra layer of waterproofing just in case the cable becomes damaged, and the round profile makes it easier to thread through the ceiling or wall cavities when installing the cable. It is also essential when using the Aquila cabinet speakers, where the cable is open to the environment and the round profile of this cable provides a good seal when used with both the terminal cover provided with the Aquila speakers and the waterproof cable connectors below.
-
- Standard cable
-
Traditional figure-8 style speaker cable
If you are planning on installing the Aqute speakers, or any other in-wall/in-ceiling speakers and running the cable inside the wall cavity, standard speaker cable can be used, as there is little risk of the cable becoming wet. The flat profile also enables it to be hidden under carpets or run neatly along skirting boards to connect into your amplifier.

Your amplifier has a volume control, but changing the volume here will affect all of your speakers at once. What if you want to turn down just the speakers in the bedroom? A volume control allows independent control of one pair of speakers, and when used in conjunction with the speaker switch enables you to gain total control of every speaker in your sound system. One volume control per pair of speakers is recommended.

Many of our speakers require a hole to be cut in the ceiling or wall. Before starting the cut, ensure you have the correct size. Some of our speakers are supplied with a handy cutting template, which can be used to line up the holes required. Others are designed to be installed in a wider variety of surfaces, in which case the required hole size can be found in the product details, and further measurements are available in the PDF data sheets which are linked to from the product pages. In all cases, the best size guide is the speaker itself, as specifications may occasionally change.

- Running Cable
-
If the property is a new build, or you are undertaking major refurbishment work, it is easiest to install the cable before the walls/ceilings have been completed. Most internal walls and ceilings have some access to run cables so as to avoid surface-mounting them.
When measuring for cabling please ensure that you have left enough spare cable length to go round corners and other obstacles in the ceiling/wall cavity. Whilst you can use the room’s internal dimensions as a guide, the length of cable required may need to be somewhat longer.
If you are using a speaker switch, you need to run one cable from each speaker to the speaker switch. From there, you only need to run one pair of cables to the amplifier. If you are planning on installing volume controls at the same location as the switch, you can use off-cuts of cable to connect the volume control to the switch, however if you are installing volume controls closer to the speakers, remember to route your cable via the volume control.
-
- Connecting Your Speakers
-
Connecting the ends of the cables to the speakers is simple. The AQUILA series and the AQCENT both use push-terminals, so you can simply bare a short section of the end of the cable and push it into place. The AQUIP and AQUTE series use spade terminals. You can connect the cable to these using the appropriate spade connectors or solder the cables directly to the terminals.
Please Note: The AQUTE series have a short length of cable included with spade connectors ready-attached for ease of connection; however for most installations, this cable is not long enough to run all the way to the amp, so an additional join may be required.
-
- Connecting speaker switches and volume controls
-
Your layout will vary depending on which accessories you are installing, but the cable should generally follow the route:
Amp (or Hi-Fi) -> Speaker Switch -> Volume Control -> Speaker
If you are also connecting your existing hi-fi speakers to the system, we would recommend connecting them to the speaker switch to ensure you do not damage the amplifier. This also allows you to switch off the speaker when they are not needed.
